Services explained

Services is a reusable library of billable items — such as tax preparation, bookkeeping, or consulting — that you can add to invoices , proposals , and time entries .

Services at a glance

A service is a named billable item with a set price. Instead of entering the same details every time you bill a client, you define each service once and reuse it across your billing workflow.

This is especially useful when your firm offers a recurring set of services: for example, you can set up a “1040 Tax Return” at a fixed rate and a “Tax consultation” billed per hour, then add them to any invoice or proposal in a few clicks.

If your firm bills at different rates depending on who does the work, you can also set up custom billing rates to assign individual rates to specific team members for any service.

If a particular job turns out to be more complex, you can adjust the rate directly in the invoice or proposal without changing the original service—or save it as a new service for future use.

How services work

Services fit into your billing workflow at whatever stage makes sense for your firm. If you track time, you can add a service to each time entry, then convert that tracked time into an invoice—so the billed amount reflects exactly how long the work took.

If you bill at a fixed rate, you can skip time tracking and add services directly to an invoice or proposal.

A typical workflow might look like this:

  1. Create services: Give each service a name, set its default price, choose whether you charge per item or by the hour, and assign a tax setting and category. You can also create a service on the spot while filling out an invoice, proposal, or time entry.

  2. Set up custom billing rates: If different team members bill at different rates for the same service, configure custom billing rates to assign individual prices per team member. TaxDome will apply the correct rate automatically whenever that person logs time or generates an invoice.

  3. Add services to a proposal: List services so the client can review what’s covered and how much each item costs before signing.

  4. Track time: As team members log time on a task or job, they can select the relevant service to track how many hours went into each type of work. If custom billing rates are configured, TaxDome automatically applies the correct rate for each team member — no manual adjustment needed.

  5. Invoice the client once the work is completed: Send the client an invoice—either generated from the signed proposal or built from tracked time entries. You can also manually add or adjust services if needed.

If you use the QuickBooks Online integration , your TaxDome services sync with QuickBooks automatically, so invoice data flows into the right income accounts without manual entry.

Access and permissions

Services are available to the firm owner and admins by default. Team members need the Manage services access rights to create and manage services.

Client view

When you send a proposal or an invoice, clients see the services you included as an itemized list with descriptions and amounts, so they know exactly what they’re being charged for before signing or making a payment.
