Desktop v4 is the Windows app you asked for: more stable, built for today’s devices, and the foundation for what’s coming next. Your files, your drive, and the way you print all stay exactly as they are—here’s everything you need to know.
Throughout this article: v3 = the current Windows app, v4 = the new one.
The short version
-
v3 retires August 20, 2026. After that, you’ll sign in with v4.
-
v4 is free
-
Your files are safe—they live on TaxDome’s servers, not in the app
-
Your drive is unchanged—same drive letter, same files, same way you print
-
You can run v3 and v4 side by side until you’re ready
Tip
Not sure which one you need? Check your device type .Frequently asked questions:
1. What’s new in v4?
-
More stable Drive sync. The issues v3 users hit most—Excel/PDF freezing during edits, files corrupting on save, unexpected disconnects—are fixed. Folder moves, renames, and replacements are more predictable, with fewer sync conflicts.
-
Built for today’s Windows devices. Runs natively on modern hardware, including Microsoft Surface and Copilot+ PCs.
-
Tax Return Delivery. Sign, invoice, and deliver in one flow—one click from the app.
-
Clear upload tracking. See what you’ve sent, where it stands, and any failed uploads, with plain error messages.
-
Advanced actions open in your browser. Signatures, approvals, job linking, and invoice locking now open in the browser—where you also get newer options the desktop app never had. You click in the app and finish there.
TaxDome Drive and the TaxDome Printer are both built into the single v4 app.
2. When does v3 retire?
August 20, 2026. After that date, v3 sign-in is disabled for most users—you’ll use v4 to keep working. Two exceptions: RDP users whose provider hasn’t deployed v4 yet, and firms approved for a temporary extension on a case-by-case basis. Outside those, v3 will return a sign-in error.
3. Why are you retiring v3?
So improvements reach you faster. Maintaining two apps split our effort; focusing on one means quicker fixes, support for new devices, better sync, and the foundation for everything we’re building next.
4. Is v4 free?
Yes. v4 is included for all users on all plans—there’s no additional cost.
5. How do I switch?
About five minutes:
-
Download and install v4 . You can run it alongside v3 during the transition.
-
Sign in with your TaxDome credentials.
-
Your files are already on the server, so there’s nothing to migrate.
6. How do I roll v4 out to my whole team?
Each team member installs v4 on their own computer and signs in with their TaxDome credentials. Everyone can run v4 alongside v3 during the transition, so your team can move over at its own pace ahead of August 20.
7. Will my files or setup be affected?
No. Your files are stored on TaxDome’s servers, not in the app—the app is a window to your data. Your TaxDome drive works the same way: same drive letter, same files, same way you print from your tax software. Switching apps moves or deletes nothing.
8. Can I run both apps at the same time?
Yes, during the transition. Both can be installed and used until August 20. After that, v3 stops accepting sign-ins, but that won’t affect v4.
9. What if I’m not ready by August 20?
Contact us—we have options for specific situations:
-
Remote Desktop (RDP) users whose provider hasn’t deployed v4 yet won’t be cut off
-
Firms with specific blockers (Drake/UltraTax integrations, custom workflows, an RDP environment still being validated)—reach out to discuss a temporary extension
-
Technical issues—our team can help troubleshoot
10. I use a hosted or RDP environment—what should I do?
Your RDP provider (RightWorks, Verito, Ace Cloud, and others) controls which version is deployed, so you can’t install v4 yourself—your provider validates and deploys it. Full RDP support is planned for v4.8.x, expected July 2026; major providers are validating v4 now, and once yours is ready, they’ll deploy it with no action needed from you. If your provider hasn’t deployed v4 by August 20, you won’t be cut off—v3 sign-in stays available to you until they do.
If your RDP provider is not listed above, reach out to them to ask about their timeline. If they are not in the process of provisioning the latest version, put them in touch with our team.
11. Is v4 an automatic update of v3?
No. v4 is a separate app you install alongside v3, and they run independently. v3 won’t auto-update—you download v4 yourself.
12. What’s not in v4 yet, and what’s coming?
A few workflows are still on the way. The main ones:
-
Native scanning—not in v4 yet (see questions 14 and 15 for how to scan in the meantime)
-
Bulk upload / document migration—moving to the web and in beta now (see question 13 )
For the full, current status of planned features, see the public roadmap .
13. How do I bulk upload or move documents from another system?
Bulk upload—used to import documents into TaxDome—is moving to the web, where it’s faster, more reliable, and works across every environment, including RDP. We also have tools to export documents from legacy systems, so you can bring everything over in one go. Both are in beta with our implementation team now—reach out and they’ll get you set up.
14. How do I scan documents now?
For now, scanning takes one extra step:
-
Scan documents to a local folder on your computer.
-
Drag that folder into TaxDome Drive .
-
Files sync automatically to the right client folder.
For high-volume scanning, organize files locally by client first, then drag each client’s folder into TaxDome Drive.
15. When will native scanning be supported?
It’s not supported in v4 yet, but it will be. We’ll share timing as it firms up.
16. Will the TaxDome Printer disappear?
No. The TaxDome Printer is built into v4 and fully supported. See Print, save, and send docs from any application to TaxDome for how to use it.
17. What are the system requirements?
v4 requires Windows 11 or later. Both x64 and ARM64 architectures are supported.
Coming soon!
Full RDP and Windows Server support is planned for v4.8.x, expected July 2026.
18. I’m having issues with v4
Check our troubleshooting guide for common issues—Drive not appearing, sync problems, printer issues. If that doesn’t solve it, use the Report problem button in the app to send logs directly to our support team, or contact us. We’re happy to help.
