Docs (Basic): Deleting & Restoring Files and Folders
You’ll find previously deleted documents in the Documents section inside the Trash tab. By default, a file stays there for 120 days until it’s permanently deleted (unless you permanently delete it beforehand). Empty folders, however, are immediately deleted and cannot be restored.
Documents and folders can be deleted and restored by a firm owner, admin or any team member with access rights to manage documents.
Covered here:
Deleting Documents
Select the checkbox next to the documents and/or folders you want to remove, then click Delete. To select all documents/folders, select the uppermost checkbox.
Note: You can delete any folder except for the default client folder with Client can view and edit access.
Click Delete in the Delete Confirmation pop-up.
Access all files that were deleted in the last 120 days in the Documents section inside the Trash tab.
To view documents deleted from a specific client account, go to the account’s Docs tab and open the Trash subtab.
Note:
- Documents removed from different locations are displayed in one list.
- Your clients don’t see documents deleted from top-level folders with Client can view or Private access in their Trash subtab. Only documents deleted from top-level folders with Client can view and edit access are visible to clients.
- You can still preview and download files when they are in the Trash section.
- When you put a document in the Trash section, it loses everything previously linked to it (invoices, signatures, etc.).
- When you delete a folder, all the documents inside it go into the Trash section. Empty folders are permanently deleted.
Permanently Deleting
You can permanently delete the files from the Trash section at any time. For example, this might be useful if you accidentally upload a document to the wrong account and don’t want the client to have access to it in the Trash section.
In the Trash tab, click the three dots to the far right of the document, then select Delete forever.
Restoring Documents
You can restore any document that wasn’t permanently deleted. Click the three dots to the far right of the document in the Trash section, then select Restore.
All restored documents will return to the Docs tab:
- If a location for the document does not exist, one is automatically generated for the restored document.
- The document’s audit trail is restored as well.
- Anything that was previously linked to the document (invoices, signatures, etc.) is not restored.
