Setting Up a Custom Website URL

TaxDome allows you to fully white-label your website address: Use your own domain name (e.g., yourtaxfirm.com) without including ours (e.g., yourtaxfirm.taxdome.com). Here, we show you how.

💡 This can get a little technical. Fast-forward to Help! I Want You to Set Up My Custom Domain if you want to avoid the jargon and have us take care of it instead.

Covered here:

Domain vs. Subdomain: What to Use When...

💡 If you already have a website, get a subdomain not a domain.

Domain: If you don’t have a website yet, purchase your desired domain name (a URL), then set up your site with it and make it serve as a login page for your TaxDome portal. Say your domain name is yourtaxfirm.com: That is all your team members and clients will see in the address bar, and you won’t need to tag on “.taxdome.com.” It takes the three steps shown below to set up a custom domain to your TaxDome client account portal.

And did you know, you are entitled to a free domain name with your TaxDome subscription? It’s yet another perk to letting us handle everything for you. Can you believe it?

Subdomain: If you already have a website for your firm, you’ll need to set up a custom subdomain (e.g., portal.yourtaxfirm.com). This way, you can use your main website as you always have, but the subdomain will bring your clients to TaxDome. And you might want to also add a link to the subdomain on your landing page to make it easy for clients and team members to log on to their TaxDome portal.

If you already own a domain name and want to set up a subdomain, skip to Step 2

Step 1. Register Your Domain Name

You’ll need to make sure that the website address you want to use stays yours and yours alone. To do that, register it with a domain name registrar—or get a free domain name with your TaxDome subscription when you let us set up your website!

  1. Choose a name for your website address. Before you get too excited, you’ll need to check that the domain name’s available, pick your best option—and decide whether you want to use .com, .us, .rocks, etc. For some helpful tips, go here.
  2. Fill in the form to get your free .com domain. If you choose to get a domain with your TaxDome subscription, we will do it all for you, so no need to move on to the next steps.

Note: If you want to purchase a website address independently, you need to choose a domain name registrar, then register your website address. Some recommended domain name registrars: godaddy.com, namecheap.com, gandi.net, and domain.com.

Step 2. Add the DNS Records to Your Domain Name Registrar DNS

If you own a domain, you’ll need to add the DNS records to your registrar’s DNS.

  • To set up the main domain (e.g., yourtaxfirm.com):

Many registrars don’t allow you to add a CNAME record for the main domain. We offer a free redirection service to bypass this limitation. On your domain name registration’s DNS management page, go to the DNS records section, create a new A record for @ that points to 23.20.222.50 (the redirection address). Next, create a CNAME record for www, point it to your firm’s TaxDome URL (e.g., yourtaxfirm.taxdome.com), then save the changes.

  • To set up a subdomain (e.g., portal.yourtaxfirm.com):

On your domain name registration’s DNS management page, go to the DNS records section, create a CNAME record for your subdomain, point it to your firm’s TaxDome URL (e.g., yourtaxfirm.taxdome.com), then save the changes.

Domain name registrars have different interfaces for setting this up. Below, we show you how with some frequently used ones:

It can take up to 48 hours for a CNAME record to get updated, but it’s usually about an hour.

Step 3. Add Your Domain/Subdomain to Your TaxDome Account

Your custom domain won’t work until you add it to your TaxDome account. Go to Settings, then open your Firm Settings tab. Find the Custom Domains section, then enter your custom domain and subdomain (if you are keeping your website separate from your TaxDome portal) in the required fields. Click Add domain. TaxDome automatically verifies that the domain/subdomain is set up correctly, and then issues an SSL certificate (this authenticates the website and enables an encrypted connection).

Note: We offer only one custom domain per firm.

Monitor the domain verification process by viewing the status next to it. You’ll see either one of these messages:

  • Preparing config: This means the SSL certificate is being prepared.
  • All Good: This means the SSL certificate is ready.

Once you’ve added a custom domain/subdomain for your TaxDome portal, you, your team, and your clients will be able to access the portal at the new URL.

Getting an Error?

  • Check that there are no spaces in your domain name or after it.
  • Check the spelling of your domain name.
  • Check that all letters are lowercase.
  • The domain/subdomain you’ve added in the DNS settings should match the one you’re adding in TaxDome’s settings. For example, if you’ve added a CNAME record for the subdomain name “portal,” you should type “portal.yourtaxfirm.com” in TaxDome’s settings; if you’ve added DNS records for “www,” you should type “www.yourtaxfirm.com” in TaxDome’s settings.

If your domain isn’t verified within 24 hours, request help from our support team!
