Custom website (Basic): Set up a custom website URL

TaxDome allows you to fully white-label your website address: Use your own domain name (e.g., yourtaxfirm.com) without including ours (e.g., yourtaxfirm.taxdome.com). Here, we show you how.

💡 This can get a little technical. Fast-forward to Help! I want you to set up my custom domain if you want to avoid the jargon and have us take care of it instead.

Covered here:

Add the DNSRecords to Your Domain Name Registrar DNS

If you own a domain, you’ll need to add the DNS records to your registrar’s DNS.

  • To set up the main domain (e.g., yourtaxfirm.com):

Many registrars don’t allow you to add a CNAME record for the main domain. We offer a free redirection service to bypass this limitation. On your domain name registration’s DNS management page, go to the DNS records section,  create three new A records for @: one that points to 34.198.164.57, another one points to 3.218.123.74 and the third one points to 18.215.202.77 (the redirection addresses). Next, create a CNAME record for www, point it to your firm’s TaxDome URL (e.g., yourtaxfirm.taxdome.com), then save the changes.

  • To set up a subdomain (e.g., portal.yourtaxfirm.com):

On your domain name registration’s DNS management page, go to the DNS records section, create a CNAME record for your subdomain, point it to your firm’s TaxDome URL (e.g., yourtaxfirm.taxdome.com), then save the changes.

Domain name registrars have different interfaces for setting this up. Below, we show you how with some frequently used ones:

It can take up to 48 hours for a CNAME record to get updated, but it’s usually about an hour.

Add Your Domain/Subdomain to Your TaxDome Account

Your custom domain won’t work until you add it to your TaxDome account. A custom domain can be added by a firm owner or admin.

Go to Settings > Firm Settings from the left menu bar. Find the Custom Domain pane, then enter your custom domain or subdomain (if you are keeping your website separate from your TaxDome portal) in the required field. Click Link custom domain. TaxDome automatically verifies that the domain/subdomain is set up correctly, and then issues an SSL certificate (this authenticates the website and enables an encrypted connection).

Once you’ve added a custom domain/subdomain for your TaxDome portal, you, your team, and your clients will be able to access the portal at the new URL.

tip

Note! We offer only one custom domain per firm.

Getting an Error?

  • Check that there are no spaces in your domain name or after it.
  • Check the spelling of your domain name.
  • Check that all letters are lowercase.
  • The domain/subdomain you’ve added in the DNS settings should match the one you’re adding in TaxDome’s settings. For example, if you’ve added a CNAME record for the subdomain name “portal,” you should type “portal.yourtaxfirm.com” in TaxDome’s settings; if you’ve added DNS records for “www,” you should type “www.yourtaxfirm.com” in TaxDome’s settings.

If your domain isn’t verified within 24 hours, request help from our support team!
