Custom domain (Basic): Set up a custom website URL

Here, find out how to change your TaxDome portal URL for white-labeling. This process involves technical steps, so if you're unsure, consider delegating it to your technician or use free assistance from our support team.

To use a custom domain for your TaxDome portal, you'll need to make changes in two places: first, by adding DNS records through your domain provider, and second, by linking the domain in your TaxDome portal settings.

Step 1. Set custom domain on your domain provider side

How many DNS records you should add depends on how you want to integrate TaxDome with your existing website. Below, you’ll find two options—choose the one that best fits your needs and follow the instructions below:

I want to add link to TaxDome portal on my website

You'll need access to your domain provider account to set up the custom domain. The process varies by provider, so we’ll outline a general approach using GoDaddy and general-ledger.online as an example. For the other providers, apply the same steps.

1. Choose a name for your TaxDome portal’s web address—like portal, accountcabinet, etc. This will be part of your firm portal URL (e.g., portal.general-ledger.online).

2. In the domain provider’s admin panel (outside of TaxDome), create a CNAME record. Set the name to your chosen word (e.g., portal) and point it to yourtaxfirm.cd.taxdome.com as shown below:

Type Host/Name Value TTL
CNAME portal [yourtaxfirm].cd.taxdome.com 1/2 hour

Example (GoDaddy):

Attention! It may take up to 48 hours for a DNS record to get updated, but it’s usually about an hour.

3.  Once you have it, link the domain in your TaxDome portal settings following the instructions below.

Attention! If you already have a website, remove the A records before setting up your domain for TaxDome. If this is not done, when specifying a custom domain in the TaxDome settings, you will get an error indicating a DNS records conflict.

1. In the domain provider’s interface (outside of TaxDome), create three A records for the custom domain in the following format:

Type Host/Name Value TTL
A @ 34.198.164.57 1/2 hour
A @ 3.218.123.74 1/2 hour
A @ 18.215.202.77 1/2 hour

Example (GoDaddy):

2. Create a CNAME record for www and point it to yourtaxfirm.cd.taxdome.com in the format:

Type Host/Name Value TTL
CNAME www [yourtaxfirm].cd.taxdome.com
1/2 hour

Example (GoDaddy)

3. Once you have it, link the domain in your TaxDome portal settings following the instructions below.

Step 2. Link custom domain (in TaxDome)

After completing the first step on your provider's side, link domain in your TaxDome portal settings:

1. Go to Settings > Firm settings from the sidebar menu.

2. In the Custom domain section, enter depending on the scenario selected in the previous step either:
  • portal.[yourtaxfirm.com], e.g., portal.general-ledger.online OR
  • [yourtaxfirm.com], e.g., general-ledger.online

3. Click Link custom domain

TaxDome automatically verifies that the domain/subdomain is set up correctly and then issues an SSL certificate (this authenticates the website and enables an encrypted connection).

Troubleshooting

If you see the "Domain not verified" error after trying to link custom domain, try the troubleshooting steps below.

  • Make sure there are no spaces in or after your domain name.
  • Double-check the spelling of your domain name.
  • Ensure all letters are lowercase.
  • The domain or subdomain in your DNS settings must exactly match what you enter in TaxDome:
    • If you added a CNAME record for portal, enter portal.[yourtaxfirm.com] in TaxDome.
    • If you added DNS records for www, enter www.[yourtaxfirm.com] in TaxDome.
  • Verify that your CNAME record points to [yourtaxfirm].cd.taxdome.com.
  • Ensure you deleted the A records before following the instructions.

Contact our support team for assistance if your domain isn’t verified within 24 hours.

Remove custom domain

The procedure depends on what you selected in step 1:
  • If you want to remove the link to the TaxDome portal from your website and use your TaxDome login link instead, click Remove custom domain in the settings and confirm your actions.
  • If you want to revert to the website's previous version, remove the three A records and one CNAME record added in step 1, then click Remove custom domain in the settings and add the necessary A records on the domain provider's side.
