Work Forecaster indicators explained (Beta)

Work in progress

The functionality is being developed and currently available for Beta users. Docs on using the feature are being prepared.

Instead of manually scanning your job list for what’s overdue, falling behind, or coming due, Work Forecaster surfaces it for you. It adds a row of indicators to the top of your Jobs page (Workflow > Jobs) that flag deadline risk early—predicting whether there’s enough time left to finish a job before its deadline, instead of waiting for it to go overdue.

Work Forecaster indicators at a glance

A color-coded bar above the indicators gives you an at-a-glance breakdown of how your jobs are distributed across all of them.

Here is what you can do with Work Forecaster indicators:

  • Take immediate actionOverdue shows jobs that have already missed their deadline and need urgent attention.
  • Plan your team’s work ahead of timeUpcoming shows jobs due within the selected period, helping you stay ahead of deadlines.
  • Prevent risks earlyStage time limit exceeded and At risk highlight jobs that are falling behind or are predicted to miss their deadline.
  • Monitor overall progressOn track and Completed during show how many jobs currently require no urgent action and how many have already been completed.

You can filter your job list down to the matching jobs by clicking an indicator, then combine it with your regular filters to narrow results even further—for example, seeing which of one team member’s jobs are At risk.

How the forecast is calculated

Work Forecaster estimates when a job will actually be done, then checks that estimate against its deadline:

  1. TaxDome looks at every stage the job still has left to go through—skipping any it won’t actually pass through—and adds up the time allowed for each one, counting from today, or from the job’s intake date if it’s set in the future—the point when the client’s documents are in and the firm can start planning the work. This gives an estimated finish date.

  2. TaxDome compares that estimate to the due date or internal deadline. If it leaves enough room, the job shows as On track. If it doesn’t, the job shows as At risk.

  3. Once the deadline has actually passed, the job shows as Overdue instead, regardless of the estimate.

For example, a job still has five stages left to go: Tax prep, Review 1, Review 2, Client signature, and E-filing. If each has a 5-day time limit, the remaining path takes 25 days. A deadline only 20 days away means the job shows as At risk.

This isn’t a one-time calculation—TaxDome updates it automatically whenever something relevant changes, like the job moving to a new stage or status, or its due date, internal deadline, or intake date being edited. Recalculation can take a few minutes to show up after a change.
