Settings (Basic): Set 2FA for your account

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security when accessing TaxDome. The additional step of authenticating your identity makes it much harder for an attacker to access your data, even if your credentials have been compromised. In this article, you can learn how to set up 2FA for yourself and what you can do if you lose access to the authentication app and can't get a code.

Enable 2FA for your account

Once you enable two-factor authentication or your firm requires it, you must have your smartphone handy whenever you log on to your TaxDome account. When you do, you’ll confirm your identity by typing the code into your mobile device.

To turn on two-factor authentication, follow these steps:

1. Click your profile at the top right, then go to Account settings, turn on Two-factor authentication toggle, enter your TaxDome account password and click Submit.

2. You’ll be presented with a list of applications that can be used for two-factor authentication, such as Authy, Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator. Install any of them on your phone.

3. Click Next step in the portal, and then, using the authentication app you installed, scan the QR code with your phone or copy the secret key and paste it into the app. Detailed instructions on how to add entries to the authentication app: Authy, Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator.

4. Click  Next step in the portal, enter the six-digit code from the authenticator app, and then click Verify. Two-factor authentication is now enabled.

tip

Note! If you enable 2FA, you will have to generate a code from your phone whenever you log in. If you lose access to your smartphone, it will take some time to access your account without it, so having a secondary device for 2FA is a good backup plan.

Enable the backup authentication method (SMS)

We strongly recommend you use our backup authentication method that uses text. It’s especially helpful if you lose access to your authenticator app. You confirm your identity by typing the code sent to your mobile device.

To enable the backup authentication method, follow these steps:

1. Click your profile at the top right, then go to Account settings. Toggle on Turn on backup authentication method (SMS), enter your TaxDome account password, then click Submit.

2. The  Backup authentication method pop-up appears, asking for your phone number. Be sure to include the country code.

3. Enter your phone number and country code, then click Next step. Enter the six-digit code that you received via text, then click Verify. Your backup authentication method is now enabled.

tip

Note! You have 5 tries to enable the SMS backup authentication method per hour. If all 5 are used up, you need to wait until you can do it again.

Sign in with 2FA enabled

Once 2FA is enabled, you’ll be prompted to enter an authentication code whenever you sign in.

When prompted, open the authentication app you are using on your smartphone, then enter the provided code.

tip

Note! The code in the app changes every several seconds, so if TaxDome does not accept it, enter the new one.

If you don’t have access to your authenticator app and you have turned on backup authentication, click Send SMS code to your phone. A text will be sent to your phone, and you’ll then be able to log in.

tip

Note! You have 5 tries per hour to resend a code via text. If all 5 attempts are used up, the button gets disabled. You need to wait until you can try again.

I've upgraded my cell phone

If you have a new cell phone, you can continue using two-factor authentication for your account. Here’s how to transfer it over to your upgraded device:

1. Import your authenticator app account to your new phone: Download the app to the device.

2. Next, log into your Google/Microsoft account or log into the app using your phone number.

3. If the TaxDome authentication appears in the app, you can use it immediately. If it doesn't, it means

I've lost access to the app

If you can’t use your authenticator app because you no longer have your phone and you don’t have a backup code, follow these steps:

  • If you’re a firm team member, contact your firm owner or admin directly, and they can disable 2FA on your account.
  • If you’re a firm owner, send an email to success@taxdome.com with a photo of your driver's license and a selfie of you holding it up. This way, we can verify your identity and make sure it’s you! Note that the verification usually takes one business day.

Disable 2FA on your account

If you no longer want to use 2FA to log in and 2FA is not required in your firm, you can disable it. Click your profile at the top right, then go to Account settings. Toggle off Two-factor authentication, enter your TaxDome account password, and then click Submit.

attention

Attention! This setting cannot be turned off if the firm owner has made it required at the firm level.
