Work in progress

The functionality is being developed and currently available for Beta users. Docs on using the feature are being prepared.

TaxDome Payments supports Affirm and Klarna, two buy now, pay later (BNPL) options that let a client split an invoice into installments while your firm receives the full invoice amount upfront, minus fees.

Note

Affirm and Klarna come with TaxDome Payments. If your firm connects Stripe directly, you can turn them on yourself in your payment settings—fees are then set by Stripe, not TaxDome. Each provider decides client and invoice eligibility; TaxDome doesn’t control approval.

Affirm and Klarna at a glance

Here’s what buy now, pay later means for your firm:

  • Split a full invoice into installments—the client completes a real-time approval process with the provider; once approved, the invoice is marked paid right away.
  • Get paid in full upfront—your firm receives the invoice amount, minus the provider’s fee, on your standard payout schedule, while the provider carries the risk of the client’s repayment.
  • Cost a flat 4.95% + $0.30 per transaction—deducted from your payout, with no cap, and no payment technology fee is added.

Affirm and Klarna are turned on automatically for eligible firms—no setup is required to start accepting them. A firm owner or admin can turn either one off from payment settings, as long as at least one other payment method stays selected.

Eligibility

  • Invoice type: Full, one-time invoices in USD only. Recurring invoices, deposits, and partial payments aren’t eligible.
  • Invoice amount: Affirm covers $50–$30,000. Klarna’s range depends on the client’s location and the installment option offered.
  • Firm eligibility for Affirm: Depends on your Stripe account’s Merchant Category Code (MCC). The main MCCs it’s available for: 8931 (Accounting, Auditing & Bookkeeping), 7276 (Tax Preparation Services), and 8111 (Legal Services). Eligibility is set by Affirm, not TaxDome.
  • Firm eligibility for Klarna: Not restricted by MCC.

How buy now, pay later works

On the invoice payment page, eligible clients see an Affirm or Klarna tile grouped under Buy now, pay later, alongside their other payment methods. On a payment made by link, without logging in, Affirm and Klarna appear instead as tabs within the payment form.

  1. The client selects the Affirm or Klarna tile, then clicks Continue to Affirm or Continue to Klarna. From a payment link, they select the Affirm or Klarna tab, then click Pay invoice.

  2. They’re redirected to the provider’s site to complete a real-time approval process.

  3. If approved, they return to TaxDome and the invoice is marked paid immediately. If declined, they return to TaxDome and are prompted to choose another payment method—the invoice stays unpaid until they do.

  4. If the client or invoice doesn’t qualify, that provider simply isn’t shown on the payment page—no error message appears.

If the client leaves for the provider without finishing and comes back, the button reads Continue with Affirm or Continue with Klarna instead, resuming the payment they started.

Note

Your firm never sees the reason for a decline. In your payment records and exports, these payments are labeled Affirm or Klarna—never a generic “card” label.
